Compost Troubleshooting: Diagnosing a Heap That Has Stalled

A compost heap that has stopped working is telling you something specific. It is never just 'bad luck with compost.'

Compost problems present as one of a small number of symptoms — smell, slow breakdown, pests, or a heap that never heats up. Each symptom points fairly directly to a cause, and fixing the cause resolves the symptom faster than starting a new pile from scratch.

The heap size that lets composting actually happen

A pile smaller than about a cubic yard (3x3x3 feet) struggles to retain the heat generated by microbial activity, especially in cool weather, and effectively behaves as slow cold composting no matter how well-balanced the ingredients are. Undersized bins are the single most common reason a carefully managed heap still fails to heat up.

Moisture checks worth doing regularly

  • Squeeze a handful from the centre of the pile — it should hold together like a wrung sponge, releasing at most a drop or two of water.
  • If it crumbles apart dry, add water while turning, a little at a time, rather than saturating from the top.
  • If water runs out freely when squeezed, add dry browns such as shredded cardboard or dry leaves and turn to redistribute.

When to just start a second bin

A heap contaminated with diseased plant material, persistent weed seeds, or a large volume of material that will not break down (like large branches) is often faster to sideline than to fully fix. Starting a fresh, well-balanced pile while letting the problem pile sit and slowly cold-compost separately avoids repeatedly disrupting a working system to chase an unsalvageable one.

Signs compost is genuinely finished

  • Dark brown to black colour, with a crumbly, soil-like texture throughout.
  • An earthy smell with no trace of ammonia, sourness, or rot.
  • No recognisable scraps, though small woody bits are normal and can be screened out.
  • The pile has cooled back to roughly ambient temperature after its earlier hot phase.
Why is my compost covered in white fuzzy growth?

That is typically actinomycetes or beneficial fungi breaking down cellulose, not a problem. It usually appears in drier pockets and is a normal part of decomposition.

Can I add too many browns?

Yes. An overly brown-heavy pile breaks down very slowly and rarely heats up, since there is not enough nitrogen to fuel microbial activity. Add greens or a nitrogen source like grass clippings to rebalance.

Is it normal for a heap to shrink dramatically?

Yes, a well-functioning heap can lose half or more of its volume as it breaks down, since much of the original bulk is water and organic matter converted to gas during decomposition.
