Air changes per hour: the number that actually matters
Air quality equipment is often marketed by vague claims like 'covers up to 500 sq ft,' but the number that actually determines whether a room's air gets meaningfully cleaner is Air Changes per Hour (ACH) — how many times the entire volume of air in that room is replaced or filtered in an hour. A tiny purifier in a huge room might technically run all day and barely move the needle if its airflow can't keep pace with the room's air volume.
ACH is calculated from room volume (length × width × ceiling height, not just floor area) and airflow rate. A tall room with a high ceiling has meaningfully more air to clean than a low-ceilinged room of the same floor footprint, which is why volume — not square footage — is the correct starting number.

Air purifiers are rated by Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), typically measured for smoke, dust, and pollen separately, in cubic feet per minute. To hit a target ACH, multiply room volume by target ACH, then divide by 60 to convert from per-hour to per-minute — that gives the required CFM the unit needs to actually deliver, not just its rated maximum in ideal lab conditions.
Manufacturers' 'coverage area' claims are often based on a lower ACH target (sometimes as low as 2) than what dedicated air-quality guidance recommends, so sizing up from the advertised room coverage is usually the safer bet for allergy sufferers or anyone targeting a specific health outcome.
Natural ventilation is free and often underused
- Opening windows on two opposite sides of a home creates cross-ventilation, which moves far more air than a single open window.
- Bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, run consistently during and after use, remove moisture and cooking pollutants at their source before they spread through the home.
