Why post spacing is the first decision, not an afterthought

Every other material quantity in a fence or trellis project — rail length, picket count, concrete, hardware — flows from how many posts you set and how far apart they sit. Get post spacing right at the planning stage and the rest of the material list follows from simple multiplication; get it wrong and you'll end up cutting rails to odd lengths or discovering a post lands in an inconvenient spot partway through digging.

Setting posts deep enough to last

A fence post that isn't set deep enough will lean or heave over time, especially in regions with freeze-thaw cycles that push shallow posts upward each winter. The standard rule of thumb is to set roughly one-third of the post's total length below ground, with an absolute minimum of 24 inches for most residential fence heights, and deeper still — ideally below the local frost line — in cold climates where frost heave is a real risk.

Rail count and why taller fences need a third rail

Horizontal rails carry the wind and structural load between posts, and a fence's height and material weight determine how many are needed. Fences up to about 4 feet — common for picket fences and garden borders — generally hold up fine with just a top and bottom rail. Taller fences, especially solid privacy panels that catch significant wind load, benefit from a third rail added at the midpoint to prevent sagging and pickets bowing outward over time.

Trellis-specific considerations

Trellises generally carry lighter loads than solid fencing since open lattice or wire grids let wind pass through rather than pushing against a solid panel, which allows somewhat wider post spacing in many cases. The exception is heavy, woody climbers like grapevines, wisteria, or mature climbing roses, which add substantial weight over years of growth — these benefit from closer post spacing and, often, a sturdier post material like pressure-treated 4x4s rather than the lighter posts adequate for annual vines like beans or morning glory.

Materials checklist beyond posts and rails

  • Post caps to shed water and prevent rot at the end grain.
  • Galvanized or coated screws and brackets rated for exterior use.
  • Gate hardware sized to the gate's weight, not a generic universal kit.
  • Concrete mix or gravel for post setting, per the calculation above.
  • A string line and line level to keep post tops even across the whole run.
How far apart should fence posts be spaced?

Most residential wood fences use 6-8 foot post spacing, with 8 feet being a common default for picket and privacy fences using standard rail lengths. Taller or heavier fences, and areas with high wind, often use tighter 6-foot spacing for extra stability.

How deep should fence posts be set?

How many rails do I need per section?
