A

AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter)Home

An electrical safety device that detects dangerous arcing conditions in wiring, a common cause of electrical fires, and shuts off power.

Increasingly required by code in bedrooms and living areas, distinct from GFCI protection which targets ground faults rather than arcing.

Air SealingHome

Closing gaps, cracks, and penetrations in a home's envelope to stop uncontrolled airflow, distinct from adding insulation.

Air sealing around penetrations like recessed lights, plumbing stacks, and top plates often delivers more energy savings per dollar than adding insulation alone.

Amperage / AmpHome

A measure of electrical current flow; household circuits and breakers are rated in amps to indicate how much current they can safely carry.

Overloading a circuit beyond its amp rating (running too many devices at once) is a common cause of tripped breakers and, if bypassed unsafely, electrical fires.

AnnualGarden

A plant that completes its entire life cycle — germination, flowering, seed, death — in a single growing season.

Annuals must be replanted every year, unlike perennials which return from the same root system.

Many vegetables (tomatoes, beans, lettuce) and popular flowers (marigolds, zinnias, petunias) are annuals.

B

Backer Board (Cement Board)Home

A rigid, water-resistant panel installed as a substrate for tile in wet areas like showers and bathroom floors.

Unlike drywall, it won't break down when it gets wet, making it the standard substrate behind tile in moisture-prone areas.

Batt vs. Blown-In InsulationHome

Batt insulation comes in pre-cut rolls or panels fitted between framing; blown-in insulation is loose material sprayed or blown to fill a space.

Blown-in fills irregular spaces and existing finished cavities more thoroughly than batts, which is why it's common for retrofitting older attics without removing drywall.

Beneficial InsectsGarden

Insects that help a garden by pollinating flowers or preying on pest species, as opposed to insects that damage plants.

Ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps are common examples that prey on aphids and other soft-bodied pests.

BiennialGarden

A plant that completes its life cycle over two growing seasons, typically growing foliage the first year and flowering/seeding the second.

Carrots, parsley, and foxglove are common biennials — most are harvested as food in year one before they'd otherwise flower in year two.

Board FootHome

A unit of lumber volume equal to a piece 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch thick (144 cubic inches), used for pricing rough and hardwood lumber.

Board footage is calculated as (thickness in inches x width in inches x length in feet) / 12, and is distinct from the linear-foot pricing used for standard dimensional framing lumber.

BoltingGarden

When a plant, usually a leafy vegetable or herb, prematurely sends up a flower stalk and goes to seed, often making leaves bitter.

Triggered by heat, long daylight hours, or stress; common in lettuce, spinach, cilantro, and basil.

Once a plant has bolted, leaf quality and flavor decline quickly and harvest should generally move on to the next planting.

C

Caulk vs. SealantHome

Both fill and seal gaps, but caulk is generally more rigid once cured while sealants (like silicone) stay flexible for joints that move.

Use flexible sealant at joints that expand and contract, like around tubs and windows; caulk is fine for static interior trim gaps that don't move.

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute)Home

A measure of airflow volume, used to rate the capacity of fans, range hoods, and HVAC equipment.

Kitchen range hoods are commonly sized by CFM relative to stove burner output (BTUs) and room size — undersized hoods fail to clear cooking smoke and moisture effectively.

ChlorosisGarden

Yellowing of normally green leaf tissue, usually caused by a lack of chlorophyll from nutrient deficiency or poor root function.

Iron and nitrogen deficiency are common causes; often linked to soil pH locking out nutrients rather than a true lack of them in the soil.

Circuit BreakerHome

A safety switch that automatically interrupts electrical current when it detects an overload or short circuit, protecting wiring from overheating.

Repeatedly tripping breakers signal an overloaded circuit or a fault and shouldn't be reset repeatedly without investigating the cause.

Cold FrameGarden

A low, transparent-topped box used to protect plants from cold and extend the growing season without full greenhouse heating.

Functions like a mini unheated greenhouse, often used to harden off seedlings or overwinter cold-tolerant greens.

Companion PlantingGarden

Growing certain plants near each other based on claimed or observed mutual benefits like pest deterrence, pollination, or efficient space use.

Some pairings have solid evidence (tall plants shading heat-sensitive ones, flowers attracting pollinators); others are more folklore than proven agronomy.

The Three Sisters (corn, beans, squash) is a classic example with genuine structural and nutrient benefits.

CompostGarden

Decomposed organic matter (food scraps, yard waste) used to improve soil fertility and structure.

Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and smells earthy — it no longer resembles the original food scraps or leaves.

A healthy compost pile balances 'greens' (nitrogen-rich material like food scraps and grass clippings) with 'browns' (carbon-rich material like dry leaves and cardboard), roughly 1 part green to 2–3 parts brown by volume.

Core AerationGarden

A lawn care practice that mechanically removes small plugs of soil to relieve compaction and let air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone.

Best done during a lawn's active growth period (fall for cool-season grasses, late spring/summer for warm-season grasses), often paired with overseeding or topdressing.

Cover CropGarden

A crop grown to improve soil rather than for harvest, typically planted in the off-season to prevent erosion and add organic matter.

Legume cover crops like clover also fix nitrogen in the soil, reducing fertilizer needs for the following season's crop.

Crop RotationGarden

Changing which plant family grows in a given bed each year to reduce pest and disease buildup and balance soil nutrient use.

A simple rotation groups crops by family (nightshades, brassicas, legumes, roots) and cycles them through different beds over 3-4 years.

Cross-PollinationGarden

The transfer of pollen between flowers of different plants (often different varieties), as opposed to self-pollination within one flower or plant.

Some crops (squash, corn) rely on cross-pollination for fruit set; others (most tomatoes) are largely self-pollinating but can still cross if grown close together, which matters for seed-saving.

CultivarGarden

A plant variety produced through cultivation and selective breeding, distinct from wild species varieties.

Cultivar names appear in single quotes after the species name, e.g. Tomato 'Brandywine', and are bred for traits like disease resistance, size, or flavor.

Curing (Concrete)Home

The chemical hardening process concrete undergoes over weeks as it reacts with water, distinct from simply drying out.

Concrete reaches most of its final strength around 28 days, though it's often hard enough to walk on within a day or two.

Days to MaturityGarden

The approximate number of days from planting (seed or transplant, depending on the crop) until a plant is ready for harvest.

For transplanted crops like tomatoes and peppers, days to maturity is usually counted from transplant date, not from seed — check the seed packet's convention.

DeadheadingGarden

Removing spent flowers from a plant to encourage further blooming and prevent seed formation.

Many annuals and repeat-blooming perennials will keep flowering longer if spent blooms are removed before they set seed, since the plant redirects energy to new flowers instead.

DeciduousGarden

A plant that sheds all its leaves seasonally, typically in autumn, as opposed to evergreen plants that retain foliage year-round.

Most temperate-climate trees and many shrubs are deciduous; leaf drop is a water- and energy-conservation strategy for cold or dry seasons.

Determinate vs. Indeterminate (Tomatoes)Garden

Determinate tomato plants grow to a fixed size and ripen most of their fruit in a short window; indeterminate plants keep growing and producing until frost.

Determinate varieties suit canning and small spaces; indeterminate varieties suit a steady harvest through the season but need larger cages or stakes.

E

EspalierGarden

A pruning and training technique that grows a tree or shrub flat against a wall or trellis in a controlled two-dimensional shape.

Common with fruit trees in small gardens, since it saves space and can improve sun exposure to the fruit.

EvergreenGarden

A plant that retains green foliage throughout the year rather than shedding it all seasonally.

Includes both needled conifers and broadleaf evergreens like holly and boxwood.

Expansion JointHome

A gap built into a rigid material like concrete or flooring to allow for movement from temperature and moisture changes without cracking.

Concrete slabs use scored or formed joints to control where cracking happens rather than leaving it random; flooring uses perimeter gaps for the same purpose.

F

FasciaHome

The vertical board that runs along the edge of a roofline, typically where gutters are mounted.

Fascia both finishes the roof edge visually and provides a solid mounting surface for gutter hangers.

FlashingHome

Thin, weatherproof material (usually metal) installed at roof and wall joints, around windows, and at other transitions to direct water away and prevent leaks.

Most water intrusion problems in homes trace back to missing, damaged, or improperly lapped flashing rather than a failure of the main roofing or siding material.

FootingHome

The wide concrete base beneath a foundation wall, pier, or post that spreads the structure's weight onto the soil to prevent settling.

Footing depth is usually set by local frost line depth — footings must sit below where the ground freezes to avoid frost heave.

French DrainHome

A gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe, used to redirect surface or groundwater away from a foundation or low area.

A common fix for chronically soggy yards or water pooling against a foundation, working by giving water an easier path than pooling on the surface.

Frost Date (Last/First)Garden

The average calendar date of the last spring frost or first fall frost for a location, used to time planting and harvest.

The 'last frost date' marks the statistical point after which frost becomes unlikely, used to schedule when to transplant tender seedlings outdoors.

These are averages, not guarantees — a 50% probability date means frost still occurs after it roughly half the time historically.

G

Germination RateGarden

The percentage of seeds from a batch expected to sprout under good conditions.

Printed on seed packets as a guide; older seed generally germinates at a lower rate than fresh seed.

Sow slightly heavier than needed if germination rate is under about 80%, then thin seedlings after they sprout.

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)Home

An electrical safety device that shuts off power within milliseconds if it detects current leaking to ground, protecting against shock.

Building code requires GFCI protection in areas near water — kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor outlets — because these are the highest-risk locations for shock.

Girdling RootsGarden

Roots that grow in a circular pattern around the base of a tree, potentially strangling the trunk and other roots as they thicken.

Often caused by trees left too long in a pot before planting; correcting root circling at planting time prevents long-term structural damage.

Grading (Site Grade)Home

The slope of the ground around a structure, ideally sloping away from the foundation to direct water away from the home.

A common cause of wet basements is negative grading — ground sloping toward the house instead of away from it — rather than a leaking foundation itself.

GroutHome

The material that fills the joints between tiles after they're set, sealing the surface and locking tiles in place.

Sanded grout is used for joints wider than about 1/8 inch; unsanded grout is used for narrower joints and on polished stone that sanded grout would scratch.

H

Hardening OffGarden

The process of gradually acclimating seedlings started indoors to outdoor conditions (sun, wind, temperature swings) before transplanting.

Typically done over 7–10 days by setting seedlings outside for increasing lengths of time in a sheltered spot before full-time outdoor planting.

Skipping hardening off often causes sunscald or transplant shock even in otherwise healthy seedlings.

Hardiness ZoneGarden

A geographic classification (USDA in the US) based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, used to predict whether a perennial plant will survive winter outdoors.

Zones range from 1 (coldest) to 13 (warmest), each split into a and b half-zones for 5°F increments.

A plant labeled 'hardy to zone 5' should survive winters where the average annual minimum stays at or above roughly -20°F.

Hardiness zone predicts winter survival only — it says nothing about summer heat tolerance, which is a separate rating (AHS Heat Zones).

HardpanGarden

A dense, compacted layer of soil that restricts root growth and water drainage.

Often caused by heavy machinery, foot traffic, or naturally occurring clay layers; broken up by deep tilling or double digging.

HardscapeGarden

The non-living, built elements of a landscape — patios, walkways, retaining walls, fences — as opposed to plants and lawn ('softscape').

A balanced landscape design typically combines hardscape for structure and function with softscape for seasonal interest and softness.

Heirloom PlantGarden

An open-pollinated plant variety passed down over generations, typically predating modern hybrid breeding.

Heirlooms breed true from saved seed, unlike F1 hybrids, but often trade some disease resistance or yield consistency for flavor and heritage.

Hybrid (F1)Garden

A plant produced by deliberately crossing two different parent varieties, often bred for vigor, yield, or disease resistance.

Seed saved from an F1 hybrid won't reliably grow true to the parent plant the next season, unlike heirloom varieties.

I

Ice DamHome

A ridge of ice that forms at a roof's edge, blocking melted snow from draining and forcing water to back up under shingles.

Usually caused by uneven roof surface temperature from poor attic insulation or ventilation, not just cold weather alone.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)Garden

A pest control approach that combines monitoring, prevention, and least-toxic interventions before resorting to broad chemical treatment.

Prioritizes methods like handpicking, row covers, and beneficial insects, reserving pesticides as a targeted last resort.

J

JoistHome

A horizontal structural framing member that spans between supports to hold up a floor or ceiling.

Floor joists typically run at 16 or 24 inches on-center and are sized (2x8, 2x10, TJI, etc.) based on the span and load they need to carry.

K

KerfHome

The width of material removed by a cutting blade, such as a saw blade, during a cut.

Matters for precise measurements — a 1/8 inch kerf blade removes 1/8 inch of material with every cut, which adds up over multiple cuts on a project.

L

Leggy GrowthGarden

Weak, elongated, sparse plant growth typically caused by insufficient light as the plant stretches toward a light source.

Common in indoor seedlings and houseplants kept too far from a light source; the fix is more light, not more water or fertilizer.

LippageHome

An uneven edge between adjacent tiles where one sits higher than its neighbor, creating a noticeable ridge.

Caused by an uneven substrate or inconsistent thinset bed; larger-format tile shows lippage more noticeably than small tile.

Load-Bearing WallHome

A wall that supports the structural weight of the floors or roof above it, as opposed to a wall that only divides space.

Removing or altering a load-bearing wall without proper support (a beam and posts) can cause structural failure.

Signs a wall may be load-bearing include running perpendicular to floor joists, sitting above another wall in the same location on a lower floor, or being part of the exterior.

Always confirm with a structural engineer or contractor before demolition — visual clues are not a substitute for verification.

M

MasticHome

A pre-mixed organic adhesive used to set tile, an alternative to thinset mortar for dry-area applications.

Easier to work with than thinset but not rated for constantly wet areas like shower floors, where thinset is required instead.

MicroclimateGarden

A small area with growing conditions (temperature, wind, moisture) noticeably different from the surrounding region.

A south-facing wall that radiates stored heat, a low spot that collects cold air, or a courtyard sheltered from wind are all microclimates.

Gardeners use microclimates to push a plant's effective hardiness zone up or down by a full zone or more.

MulchGarden

A layer of material spread on top of soil to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and moderate soil temperature.

Organic mulches (bark, straw, shredded leaves) break down over time and feed the soil; inorganic mulches (gravel, landscape fabric) don't but last longer.

Keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to avoid trapping moisture against the bark.

N

No-Till GardeningGarden

A growing method that avoids disturbing soil structure through tilling, relying instead on surface mulching and amendments.

Proponents argue it preserves soil microbial life and structure better than annual tilling, at the cost of more manual weeding in early seasons.

Nominal SizeHome

The named, rounded dimension of a piece of lumber or pipe, which differs from its actual measured dimension.

A 2x4 measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches after milling and drying — the '2x4' name reflects its rough-cut size before finishing, not its final size.

O

On-Center (O.C.)Home

A measurement convention describing the distance between the centerlines of repeated framing members, like studs or joists.

16 inches on-center is the most common residential stud and joist spacing; 24 inches on-center is used for lighter loads or advanced framing techniques.

P

Paint SheenHome

The level of gloss in a paint finish, ranging from flat/matte to high-gloss, which affects durability, cleanability, and how imperfections show.

Flat and matte hide wall imperfections best but scrub less well; semi-gloss and gloss clean easily and resist moisture, making them common choices for trim, kitchens, and bathrooms.

PerennialGarden

A plant that lives for more than two years, typically dying back and regrowing from the same root system each season.

Perennials trade first-year size and bloom for long-term investment — many take two to three seasons to reach full size ('sleep, creep, leap').

Hardiness zone determines which perennials survive winter outdoors in a given location.

Plumb, Level, and SquareHome

Three separate measures of correct alignment: plumb means perfectly vertical, level means perfectly horizontal, and square means at a true right angle.

A wall can be plumb but a room can still be out of square, which is why experienced builders check all three independently rather than assuming one implies the others.

PrimerHome

A preparatory coating applied before paint to seal the surface, improve adhesion, and even out porosity or color.

Primer is especially important on new drywall, bare wood, stains, and dramatic color changes; skipping it often means needing extra topcoats to compensate.

R

R-ValueHome

A measure of a material's resistance to heat flow; higher R-value means better insulating performance.

R-values are additive when materials are layered, and they combine per inch of thickness for a given material.

Recommended attic and wall R-values vary by climate zone and are set by local building code.

RebarHome

Steel reinforcing bar embedded in concrete to add tensile strength, since plain concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension.

Used in footings, slabs, and walls where cracking or bending forces are expected; sized and spaced based on the structural load.

Ridge VentHome

A ventilation strip installed along the peak of a roof to let hot, humid attic air escape, usually paired with soffit vents for airflow.

Balanced intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge) ventilation reduces attic heat buildup in summer and moisture buildup in winter, both of which shorten roofing lifespan.

Row CoverGarden

A lightweight fabric laid over crops to protect against frost, insects, or wind while still letting light and water through.

Floating row covers can add a few degrees of frost protection and physically block many flying pest insects from reaching plants.

S

Scarification (Seed)Garden

Physically nicking, sanding, or soaking a hard seed coat to help water penetrate and trigger germination.

Needed for seeds with naturally tough coats like morning glory, moonflower, and some tree seeds that wouldn't otherwise germinate reliably.

Self-PollinatingGarden

A plant capable of fertilizing itself using pollen from the same flower or plant, without needing another plant or pollinator.

Most tomatoes and beans are largely self-pollinating, which is part of why they breed relatively true from saved seed.

Service Panel (Breaker Box)Home

The central distribution point where electrical service enters a home and is split into individual circuits, each protected by a breaker.

Panel amperage (commonly 100, 150, or 200 amps in modern homes) sets the overall capacity for everything the home can run at once.

ShimHome

A thin, often tapered piece of material used to fill small gaps and adjust alignment when installing doors, windows, or cabinets.

Wood shims are common for door and window installation; plastic shims are often preferred under cabinets since they won't compress over time.

Sistering (Joists)Home

Reinforcing a weak, damaged, or undersized floor or ceiling joist by attaching a new joist alongside it.

A common repair for sagging floors or joists notched too deeply for plumbing/electrical runs, avoiding a full structural replacement.

SoffitHome

The finished underside of an architectural element, most commonly the horizontal surface under a roof's overhang.

Roof soffits often include ventilation to allow attic airflow, which works with ridge or gable vents to reduce moisture buildup.

Soil AmendmentGarden

Any material mixed into soil to improve its structure, drainage, fertility, or pH.

Amendments differ from fertilizers in that they change the physical or chemical structure of soil rather than just feeding plants directly.

Common examples include compost, aged manure, peat moss, perlite, and lime. Most vegetable gardens benefit from an inch or two of compost worked in each season.

Soil pHGarden

A measure of soil acidity or alkalinity on a 0–14 scale, where 7 is neutral; most garden plants prefer 6.0–7.0.

pH controls how available nutrients are to plant roots — even well-fertilized soil can starve plants if pH locks nutrients out of reach.

Lime raises pH (less acidic); sulfur lowers it (more acidic). Changes happen gradually over a season or more.

Square (Roofing)Home

A roofing measurement unit equal to 100 square feet of roof surface, used for estimating shingles and other roofing materials.

A roof's area in squares, plus a waste factor for cuts and hips/valleys, determines how many bundles of shingles to order — most shingles come 3 bundles to a square.

Stratification (Seed)Garden

Exposing seed to a period of cold, moist conditions to break dormancy and trigger germination, mimicking winter.

Many perennial and tree seeds native to temperate climates need this cold period before they'll sprout, even indoors under otherwise ideal conditions.

StudHome

A vertical framing member in a wall, typically 2x4 or 2x6 lumber spaced 16 or 24 inches on-center, that supports the wall and anchors drywall or siding.

'Finding a stud' before hanging anything heavy matters because drywall alone can't support much weight — a stud finder or a light tap test can locate them.

SubfloorHome

The structural layer of a floor, typically plywood or OSB, installed directly on top of floor joists beneath the finished flooring.

Subfloor condition — flatness, moisture, squeaks — should be addressed before installing any new finished flooring on top.

SubstrateHome

The surface or base layer that a finish material (tile, flooring, paint) is applied to or installed over.

Substrate condition — flatness, moisture content, cleanliness — has a bigger impact on finish longevity than the finish material itself in most failures.

Succession PlantingGarden

Sowing a crop in small batches every few weeks instead of all at once, to spread out the harvest.

Common for fast-maturing crops like lettuce, radish, and beans so the whole harvest doesn't ripen in one short window.

T

ThatchGarden

A layer of living and dead organic matter (stems, roots) that builds up between the soil surface and green grass blades in a lawn.

A thin layer (under half an inch) is normal and even beneficial; excess thatch blocks water and nutrients from reaching soil and roots and should be dethatched.

Thinset MortarHome

A cement-based adhesive used to bond tile to a substrate such as backer board, concrete, or plywood.

Applied with a notched trowel, thinset differs from mastic (an organic adhesive) in that it cures by hydration and can be used in wet areas like showers.

Toe KickHome

The recessed space at the base of kitchen or bathroom cabinets that allows room for feet while standing close to the counter.

Typically about 3-4 inches deep and 4 inches tall, and often finished with a matching or contrasting panel.

Topdressing (Lawn)Garden

Spreading a thin layer of material — typically compost or sand — over an established lawn to improve soil quality or level minor unevenness.

Topdressing is usually done after core aeration so the material can work into the loosened soil rather than sitting on top of thatch.

Transplant ShockGarden

Temporary stress and stunted growth a plant experiences after being moved, due to root disturbance and a change in environment.

Symptoms include wilting, leaf drop, and slowed growth for one to a few weeks after transplanting.

Watering thoroughly at transplant time and avoiding transplanting during the hottest part of the day both reduce shock.

U

U-FactorHome

A measure of how much heat passes through a window, door, or skylight assembly; lower U-factor means better insulating performance.

U-factor is essentially the inverse of R-value and is the standard rating for windows because it accounts for the whole assembly (glass, frame, spacer), not just one material.

UnderlaymentHome

A thin layer of material installed between the subfloor and finished flooring to smooth minor imperfections, add cushioning, or manage moisture.

Different flooring types require different underlayment — foam for laminate, cement board for tile in wet areas, felt or membrane for some hardwood installs.

V

Vapor BarrierHome

A material (often polyethylene sheeting) installed to prevent moisture vapor from passing through a wall, floor, or ceiling assembly.

Placement matters by climate — in cold climates it typically goes on the warm (interior) side of insulation; in hot, humid climates the logic reverses. Installing it on the wrong side can trap moisture and cause rot.

VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)Home
