New Vinyl Flooring Needs to Air Out Before It's 'Finished'

The 'new floor smell' is off-gassing, and closing the room up to protect the finish is exactly the wrong move.

Vinyl and luxury vinyl plank are made with plasticizers and adhesives that continue releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for days after installation, fastest in the first 48-72 hours. The smell is a rough proxy for concentration, though low-VOC products can off-gas without much odor at all.

Ventilation is the actual variable that matters, not waiting it out in a sealed room. Open windows and run exhaust fans for the first week, and avoid installing right before sealing the house up for winter if you can help it.
