It Takes Forty-Five 80 lb Bags to Make One Cubic Yard
One cubic yard of concrete is about forty-five 80 lb bags or sixty 60 lb bags — roughly 1.6 tonnes you carry by hand.
An 80 lb bag of concrete mix yields approximately 0.6 cubic feet. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so a yard needs about 45 bags. A 60 lb bag yields roughly 0.45 cubic feet, putting a yard at about 60 bags.
Beyond about half a cubic yard, ready-mix or a mixing trailer almost always wins on cost, consistency, and your back. The other argument for ready-mix on slabs is continuity: a slab poured from bags mixed in batches over hours has cold joints, and cold joints crack.
