Screw and Nail Size Guide for Common Projects

Fastener choice depends on what you're joining and how much load it carries. As a rule, a screw or nail should penetrate the base material by at least 1 to 1.5 times the thickness of the piece being fastened, and 1.5 to 2 times for structural framing connections.

Notes

  • Screws hold better in shear-light applications (cabinets, trim); nails flex slightly and resist shear/impact better, which is why framing code still favors nails in many structural connections.
  • Penny size (d) is a historical unit referring to nail length, not diameter — 16d is 3.5 inches regardless of nail thickness.
