HVAC Air Filter MERV Rating Chart
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) ranks a filter's ability to capture particles from 1 (least) to 20 (most, hospital-grade). Higher isn't always better for a home system — a MERV rating beyond what your HVAC blower is rated for restricts airflow and can strain the equipment.

| 13-16 | Bacteria, most smoke, fine particulates | High-efficiency residential/light commercial, check system compatibility |
| 17-20 | Virus carriers, combustion smoke, fine particulates | Hospital/cleanroom-grade HEPA, not compatible with residential blowers |
Notes
- Check your HVAC manufacturer's maximum recommended MERV rating before upgrading — many residential blowers are only rated up to MERV 13 without a static pressure problem.
- A clogged filter restricts airflow regardless of its MERV rating; replace filters on the schedule printed on the packaging (commonly every 1-3 months) rather than by rating alone.
- Filters above roughly MERV 13 in an incompatible system can reduce airflow enough to freeze the evaporator coil or shorten blower motor life.
