The Most Common Decorating Mistake Is a Rug That Is Too Small

If the front legs of your sofa and chairs are not on the rug, the rug is one size too small.

Living room rug sized under the front legs of the sofa

A rug's job in a seating area is to draw the furniture into one visual group. When it is too small it does the opposite: it becomes an isolated island, and the eye reads the gap between rug edge and furniture as wasted space, shrinking the room.

  • Living room: at minimum the front legs of every seat on the rug; ideally all legs.
  • Dining room: rug extends 24-30 inches (60-75 cm) past the table on all sides so chairs stay on it when pulled out.
  • Bedroom: rug extends 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) past the sides and foot of the bed.
