An Undersized Basement Dehumidifier Runs Constantly and Still Loses
A dehumidifier sized for a bedroom, put in a damp basement, will run nonstop and still leave the room feeling clammy.

Dehumidifier capacity is rated in pints removed per 24 hours at a reference condition, and manufacturers publish sizing charts based on square footage and how damp the space already is — 'moderately damp' basements need roughly 10-12 pints per 1,000 square feet, 'very wet' basements with visible condensation or a musty smell need closer to 20+ pints. A unit sized for a bedroom's mild humidity, dropped into a genuinely wet basement, runs continuously trying to keep pace with moisture entering faster than it can remove it.
The comfort test after sizing correctly should be an intermittent duty cycle, not constant running — a unit that never shuts off is either undersized or fighting a moisture source, like an uncapped sump or unsealed foundation crack, that needs fixing separately.
