Roofing
Asphalt Shingles
Fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and mineral granules, the most common residential roofing material worldwide for its low cost and easy installation.

Best for
- Standard residential re-roofing on a budget
- Most sloped-roof homes in temperate climates
- Quick installation timelines
Avoid when
- Extremely hot climates where lifespan shortens noticeably
- Homeowners planning to stay decades and wanting to avoid a second re-roof
3-tab vs architectural
Basic 3-tab shingles are flat and cheaper but rated for lower wind speeds and shorter lifespans (around 15-20 years). Architectural shingles cost more, look more dimensional, and typically last 25-30 years with better wind ratings.
Granule loss is normal, up to a point
Some granule shedding into gutters is normal, especially on a new roof or after a big storm. Bald patches showing black asphalt underneath signal the shingle is failing and needs attention.
