A Higher MERV Filter Isn't Automatically Better for Your HVAC System
Upgrading to the highest MERV filter you can find can restrict airflow enough to reduce efficiency and shorten the life of the blower motor.

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how effectively a filter captures particles of a given size — higher numbers catch smaller particles. But a denser filter media also resists airflow more, and residential HVAC blowers are sized around a specific pressure drop. Push a MERV 13 filter into a system designed for MERV 8, and the blower works harder to push the same volume of air, often falling short and reducing both comfort and efficiency.
Most residential systems handle MERV 8-11 without modification. Anything higher should be checked against the manufacturer's specification, and it's especially important to change high-MERV filters on schedule since they clog faster.
