An Unlabeled Breaker Panel Is a Safety Problem, Not Just an Inconvenience

Breaker panels get relabeled informally over the years as rooms are renovated, circuits get added, and previous owners' notes go stale. In a real emergency — a scorching outlet, an appliance fire, standing water near a circuit — the person at the panel needs to kill the right breaker immediately, not flip switches until the lights go out.

Relabeling properly takes an afternoon: turn breakers off one at a time and walk the house checking what loses power, using a helper or a phone call if working alone. Label clearly with the room and specific outlets or fixtures, not just 'upstairs.'
